Data Sources & Licensing
Last Updated: January 24, 2026
Our approach
We believe you should know exactly where your data comes from and on what basis we provide it. This page lists each dataset we serve, its underlying source, the license basis, and any attribution. It complements our Terms of Service (which govern your use of the data) and our Privacy Policy.
Our backbone is public-domain U.S. government data (SEC filings and federal economic statistics), supplemented by licensed third-party market data for prices and fund NAV. We deliberately do not serve proprietary security identifiers we are not licensed to redistribute (see below).
Sources by dataset
| Dataset | Source | License basis |
|---|---|---|
| Equity prices (daily OHLCV, adjusted) | EOD Historical Data | Licensed for redistribution under our agreement with the provider |
| Fund NAV (ETF/MF/CEF, daily) | EOD Historical Data | Licensed for redistribution |
| Company fundamentals (income, balance sheet, cash flow) | SEC EDGAR / XBRL filings | U.S. government work — public domain (17 U.S.C. §105) |
| Fund holdings (position-level, point-in-time) | SEC Form N-PORT (2019–present) | Public domain |
| Macro / economic series, yield curves | U.S. Treasury, Bureau of Labor Statistics, Bureau of Economic Analysis, Federal Reserve | U.S. government works — public domain |
| Security identifiers (public) | Ticker symbols; FIGI (OpenFIGI) | FIGI is openly licensed and free to redistribute |
| Ratings, computed ratios, derived metrics | Synapse Discovery (our own calculations) | Computed by us from the sources above |
Methodology notes
- Point-in-time. Where we offer point-in-time queries, we serve data as it was knowable on the requested date (e.g., fundamentals by filing date, fund holdings by the date the N-PORT became public). This is a best-effort compilation methodology, not a warranty of accuracy.
- Survivorship-free. We retain delisted, merged, acquired, and bankrupt securities and cut their price/NAV history at the last trading day, so historical queries are not biased toward survivors. Again, best-effort, not a guarantee.
- Ratings are our own. Our synapse star rating and other scores are computed by us from our own data; they are not Morningstar ratings and are not affiliated with or endorsed by any third-party rating agency.
- Units. Expense ratios and portfolio weights are expressed as fractions or percentages as documented in the API reference; returns are decimals.
- Coverage is stated honestly. See our coverage page / API docs for per-dataset depth and known gaps (e.g., fund holdings begin in 2019 because Form N-PORT did not exist earlier; prospectus-sourced fund profiles do not yet cover 100% of funds).
Identifiers we do not serve
CUSIP and ISIN identifiers are proprietary (administered by CUSIP Global Services). We do not redistribute them through the Services. Where you need a cross-dataset key, we provide the open FIGI identifier instead.
Attribution & no warranty
Government data is used in accordance with the publishing agencies' fair-access and attribution practices. Licensed third-party data is used under our agreement with the originating provider and remains subject to that provider's terms.
All data is provided "as is," without warranty of accuracy, completeness, or fitness for any purpose, and the Services do not constitute investment advice. See our Terms of Service.
